One of the most diverse classes that I have had the privilege to teach this year is English 12 Literary Studies. Within this class of 16-17 years old from a variety of different backgrounds. This population has varying levels of trauma from both the pandemic and flooding last year and is also a mixture of backgrounds. The specific subject area within the English 12 curriculum was responding to a visual text, “Autodale“. The classroom is “blended” as it utilizes Teams for the description and submission of assignments. The average number of students was around 25. Some of the learning challenges that exist within the classroom are dyslexia, ASD, ADHD, low literacy levels and lack of motivation.

One aspect of UDL that I wish I had included within the assessment of the response is student self-reflection and assessment. Rather than having students wait for my feedback, I would like to teach and allow students to reflect deeply on their thinking.
